Hanwood Centre, Retaining Wall Infill, Dundonald - July 2008

CFA piles were installed for retaining wall with piles omitted as one of Belfast's main water supplying pipelines ran through the site. This gap was to be piled once the water supply pipe had been diverted. As this was holding up the contract, the site works carried on, including casting of the main retaining walls. A low vibration piling method was required, that could cope easily cope with difficult access conditions and also support horizontal loading to piles. Larsen in conjunction with the engineers Faber Maunsell value engineered a combination of vertical and raked piles to manage the horizontal thrust.

  • 8 vertical coupled with 6 raking piles
  • From 5-8m
  • Up to 500kn SWL
  • All piles driven to refusal on rock
  • No spoil
  • All piles cut to correct finishing level by Larsen
  • Main Contractor - T & A Kernoghan
  • Engineer - Faber Maunsell
